It shocked us to learn that the children of military families were experiencing food insecurity. According to a 2020 study by the Defense Department, 24% of military families are severely affected by high inflation and the economic downturn which is causing hardship when trying to get the food they need.
When we became aware of this, we searched for opportunities to help and one of our partners, Kings Warriors, was preparing for their second Feeding The Troops event at Miramar Naval Base in Camp Pendleton.
We loaded our truck with all the clothing we had in the warehouse and drove two hours south where we were welcome with salutes and smiles. Since we don’t normally provide food, we supplemented the day of giving with over 1,000 articles of new clothing. We had cases of jackets, shoes, dresses and robes.
Along with providing essentials to military children, we were able to speak to the spouses and learned that cutting back was a constant struggle as they coped with affordable child care and joblessness. We also learned that the military will be implementing new measures to better assist families of those deployed.
At the end of the day, our truck was empty, and we were left with the lasting memory of grateful kids.
